ill be honest, i half way expected to see at least one of these guys in the NBA ,commentating, coaching a successful team, or SOMETHING positive. i WANTED that for these guys. but i was a little disappointed when i googled them and followed up.
Gates is a pastor, and lives basically in the ghetto where he grew up and provides for his family. Agee is broke, has horrible credit due to his late father opening up various credit cards using his social, and has no job. he is riding the 'hoop dreams' wave. he sells hoop dreams merchandise and acts as a motivational speaker....?
what!? sorry Arthur, i wish you nothing but the greatest success, but who exactly are you going to motivate? i wouldnt let him speak to my kids if i had any. what are you going to teach them? how to be broke, jobless, and have a tumultuous life with 4 kids from 4 different women? and live in you GIRLFRIENDS home? its easy to be the guy to tell people "dont be like me", but whats not easy is to be someone that can tell kids "be like me!"
It's a little disheartening to see, but these two fell into the same trap that everyone else did. working to live. and never doing anything more. but could we really expect much else? everyone looked up to them just because the had cameras on them, but the truth is that they are nothing special. they are just like every other kid out there with athletic ability that realizes life comes after sports. and when they don't make it to the pros, it seems disappointing. like i said, these kids are not the exception, they are the rule. any 2 kids could have been in this movie. do you have any idea how many athletes out there get scholarships to play at a college level every year with aspirations of being a professional athlete? thousands and thousands. every year.
