Before watching this I would say I was neutral on this issue, maybe a little on against because of my concern that the kids would grow up gay. After watching this my opinion has changed. This show has shown me a million reasons why it should be okay for gays to adopt. The womans only arguement is religion. Weak in my opinion. She is so sure of her beliefs but can't answer any questions besides refering to god.

What struck me the most in watching this episode is the courage this woman has to go into a setting that was likely to be hostile. I can imagine what a struggle it was for her. She was isolated and regularly berated by the people with whom she came in contact. I absolutely stand by the host family and the rights of anyone to adopt who can provide a loving home, and, at the same time have empathy for this woman's experience.
What I observed happening is that her blind faith was being challenged, and that was terrifying for her. Someone noted below that she has religion as her only argument and that it's a weak one. Often our religious beliefs are taught to us as absolute. How scary to start to have those absolute roots of how we think life should be shaken! I say, give her a little room and a little credit for being courageous enough to stay in the situation. How many of us would immerse ourselves in a world that runs counter to our deepest values? I would assume that something has begun to fundamentally shift in this woman, and it may take some time to see the long-term effects of her experience. Still, when we want to change someone's opinion, yelling and insisting that they are absolutely wrong doesn't usually work, and, in fact, adds to negative stereotypes. I give credit to the host family as well for being willing to open up their home and lives to scrutiny as well. They are clearly a warm and wonderful family, and I was reminded how important that is in my life. I want children! I'm grateful to this episode for shining light on the foster care and adoption crisis as well. Let's all breathe and give each other a little bit more room and then see what we can create in a unified way. Was this review helpful?
