It's great to see that 98-year-old filmmaker Kaneto Shindo is reaching a wider audience in this country -- thank you, Hulu and Criterion. I've seen Onibaba many times, but until Kuroneko screened in San Francisco last year, I'd never watched any of his other movies. The Naked Island is very different from both films, so anyone hoping for another supernatural or spooky freak-out may be disappointed. The slow pacing and lack of dialogue might turn others off, but I think that it's a beautiful little movie with gorgeous cinematography and a memorable, John Barry-like score. Hang in there, and keep in mind that there's more to it than the first half hour might suggest!
