Lots of similarities to Little Women by Alcott...the stress of war time doesn't show very much and it lacks emotion in a lot of respects, but it's for an Japanese audience that would extrapolate the subtle nuances of each situation...still I'd give the film as a while a C+...passes well, not good or par. There's lots of historical revisionism here...the kimonos were rarely that nice back in the 1930's, and the mens suits were much too modern. The traditional houses were also much too modern...but they filmed in ugly "western" concrete buildings to make it seem like it was the urban 1930's. Portrayal of Japan in the 1930's: D+...it was just off in so many little ways.
