A well-crafted samurai tale with superb acting, striking cinematography, and a fair amount of blood. The film tends to progress slowly -- painstakingly it seems at times -- but the payoff is well worth it. Having a solid knowledge of Japanese history is not required, although a basic understanding will shed some light on the ritual practice of "harakiri" as it is portrayed. Characters face dire circumstances, and sometimes their plights are difficult to view on screen. The real boon, however, is watching the mystery unravel to its satisfying climax. Highly recommended; an undeniable classic. Belongs in every samurai film collection.
