From the constant sound of machine guns I expected many more casualties on both sides but everything worked out as expected including our hero. It's the kind of nail-biting movie you can watch over and over again and not tire of it.
Although Sinatra was fair....I thought it was Trevor Howard who shone as the real star here. I guess you could say that Sinatra was to acting what Trever Howard was to pop music. Worth the time to have seen it again after almost 30 years.
Von Ryan's Express is based on a 1964 novel of the same name(complete fiction.)This was not a B movie this was a Big Budget film in 1965, 20th century fox was trying to prove that they were still able to make a bankable film after Cleopatra Bombed at the Box Office. This film was also Nominated for the 1966 oscar for Best visual effects and Best sound. It was made as pure action entertainment and it still delivers.
I have always thought of this as the best of the B list WWII movies. It isnt up there say with Bridge over River Kwai or Great Escape or Guns of Navarone let alone some of the contemporary movies like Ryan but it is a solid action-adventure war movie. One of Sinatra's better efforts and he is greatly helped by a stong supporting cast. Nice location scences in Italy. Maybe goes on a little much toward the end.
Sinatra has never been better. If you like war movies, action films, train chases, and Indiana Jones type of thrills then you'll love this wonderful old movie!
