Guadalcanal was a brutal and bloody affair, which is not what this movie would seem to portray. It really sugar coats it, but I may be wrong. Truthfully the best person to tell me ...

Unique!
Hard to describe, this film was almost like a cross between a classic Walt Disney film and old WWII News Reels. The 27 Oct 1943 release date has me a bit puzzled. Nonetheless, I did find the film very capitivating, quite a feat for a Black and White film, since I usually lose interest in them fairly quickly. I'm giving this one 5 stars and recommending it to all lovers of nostalgia and history. A very unique film indeed.

Possibly the most politically incorrect war movie ever
This movie is the epitomy of the WWII movie stereotype. From the constant use of the terms "Japs" to the slanty-eye and yellow monkey humor to the cast of characters that includes a Bugs Bunny-esque guy from Flatbush Brooklyn who drives a cab with a fast meter, this movie is a rich depository of every bad WWII movie slang and stereotype available. Yeah, and the fighting isn't bad either...
But why the hell would they show Americans gunning down unarmed Japanese soldiers swimming for their lives is beyond me! Seriously! Its like the scene out of the Bond film where they flood the tunnels and the bad guys start machine gunning the drowning construction workers (the bond film with the plot to cause a huge earthquake to destroy silicon valley and cause a run on IPODS or solar calculators or whatever electronics were available in 1986).
