Secretly, I hope for every movie to be a hidden gem I can go tell my friends about, or enjoy with my family. My point is that I don't go into movies trying to find fault with them for no good reason. I do, however, hold the movies to certain standards. For instance, I expect to be entertained first and foremost. I expect the story to be presented to me in a reasonable manner, with enough script to get it all across with some emotion in there. I also expect characters capable of stirring up some emotion in me whether it be caring or hatred or fear, whatever. Barring that, I expect to learn something. Which brings me to Claude Chabrol and his catalog of sleep inducing crapfests. This movie in particular has the look of an after school special or maybe a lifetime movie. As usual, the characters are drab while being over the top, virtually assuring you won't identify with them, and in general, not acted well. It almost seems like the movie goes out of it's way to be uninteresting. Every time you get close to something you might want to watch, the script steps in with some idle French chit chat to cut the excitement level down a hair. I truly believe these actors to be incapable of generating suspense. By the time the script makes it's big reveals, it's too little, too late to save this boring turd. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
