I’m a big aviation fan so I found this documentary to be a lot of fun. A look at all the major milestones of human flight from the perspective of historians at the buildup towards WWII. With a large focus on the very early flight attempts it is amazingly well done using a combination of (what I assume to be) a number of reenactments. I haven’t seen many films from recent years with this much focus on pre-wright brothers aviation.
When this film was produced modern flight is an amazing topic of wonder filled with airshow feats, records being broken, and reflection on how much travel has been airliners. As a recreational pilot myself I found the demonstration of modern instrument flight (for flying when you can’t navigate visually) to be especially entertaining considering how primitive the equipment was. I couldn't imagine being on a plane flown in an era completely oblivious to so many environmental and safety issues that have since been solved. Just as the producers of this film in the 30s marveled at aviation’s progress it ironically gives modern viewers a similar perspective on progress over the last 70 years. At the same time makes this viewer long a bit for the “simpler” days when flight was about the joy and freedom of slipping the bonds of earth.
