Fresh from producing a masterpiece, The Battle of Algiers, Pontecorvo made an even more audacious film; one of the first realistic depictions of the Holocaust.

I would loved to say this is another masterpiece, but I don't think it is. The plot becomes increasingly melodramatic, the musical score is overwrought, and Susan Strasburg is less convincing after her metamorphosis into the sadistic kapo. Nonetheless this is a film well worth seeing - and thinking about.

Holocaust movies have never been my cup of tea, not that holocaust pics are anyone's cup of tea, but this movie begs to be watched. It's the only movie on the subject that puts you there in the concentration camp to experience the actual choices one must make in such a situation. It never makes excuses, or glosses over anything, it's so darn real it'll make you cringe. I think this is too much for most viewers, even though I suggest everyone should watch it. Brilliant, but don't expect to enjoy it.
