I would venture to say that looking at the father as a tyrant misses out on what Ozu was trying to capture. I believe the film is much more concerned with the interplay between the old and new Japan. Indeed, the somewhat harsh treatment of the Father (in terms of being portrayed as contradictory and unfair) seems to Ozu's way of tipping his hat to the new generation. The father was simply trying to maintain some semblance of the past in a Japan that was rapidly changing. For another perspective on this, consider Holden Caulfield, who wishes he can keep his sister in a glass container to keep her from changing. I believe the father here in Equinox Flower feels the same way. Do not forget that the father caves in the end, giving into his daughter's happiness over tradition. See 1 other reply

The father treated the daughter like she was a twelve-year-old being grounded. Stay at home from work until she changes her way of thinking to his? Come on! This is a grown woman! Check with him first before she dates/marries? Glad I don't live in Japan, if that's how it is! He should have been glad she didn't just move out/move in with her boyfriend! And, that the guy had a good job/was decent!
