I have found that it is not apathy...but failure that reaps rewards in our country at its present state. A school nearby is succeeding at competency... but its schools are in a state of disrepair. Our districts school is 2 points from competent( which is still incompetent) but they are rewarded with federal funds to tear down and build 3 new school buildings??? No child left behind means that intelligent children are not raised up to a higher level of education, but dragged down to the level of the weakest link. . .there is no incentive to succeed. In Ohio, we have had a success as less teen pregnancy and safe sex being taught have led to less children being born as a drain on taxpayers....thank you. So as a reward for not generating as rapidly as other states, we are loosing a representative in congress???Lastly, i work alot at my job and side jobs including plumbing and computer repair just to make ends meet. My wife and I have destroyed our credit cards and are free after 2 yrs to never use one again. At the grocery store, I was picking up the bare essentials that we could afford, wishing I could get more when i saw 2 ladies with their carts stocked with meats..I mean stocked. At the checkout, i noticed the new cellphones, nice manicure, and clothes that are definitely beyond my ability to afford for my wife. the cost on those carts was astronomical...then one pulled out her welfare card and payed...i mean to say you payed, i payed. . .and i couldn't afford 1/8 of what she bought. I succeed by not needing help. Don't get me wrong. . .my state came through for insurance for my wife and kids when i lost my job. . .i never collected a dime of unemployment and was back to work in a month... but honestly, how much do i have to not work to afford a loaded refrigerator?? sadly I have to agree with you here... hell I served as an 0311 in 2 wars and you could probably ever consider me a jingoist but this countries is kinda in the dumps right now... not because the government is not doing their job but because the people have gone soft... most people just complain about things they don't like and those that do act do so peacefully with idiot rallies or petitions... now before anyone goes all "oh Gandhi" on me I am not saying peaceful protest never works just that it does not do so well in a country like america that was founded and is mired in traditions of excessive use of force... people are to complacent with just complaining or are to pussy to risk sacrificing what they have for their beliefs... unless that changes nothing else will   See 10 other replies

I love the way you write JM, very poetic, and everything you say is spot one, especially the education bits. "Government of the people, for the people, by the people..."(Abraham Lincoln) is dying in this country. Quite frankly I believe this country deserves whats coming. The system is failing because we are allowing it to fail, and its only gonna get worse. Each generation is more apathetic than the last. To quote The Human Abstract "A voice cries from underneath:Dark shepherds strongly though you wield the staff.You're weakened by comfort There's no way you're prepared for what happens last:Action Reaction." The social contract is dead not because the government is not holding up there end, but because We the People have forgotten that we have the power to enact change. First lesson in my POL 336 The Presidency and the Executives course was the president has very little control over what happens in his presidency. They get blamed and credited for things that they really had almost nothing to do with. By the way i think the word you were looking for was corporation, which is a business, as opposed to a cooperation which is the noun form of cooperate.
