First, Jesus more likely did not look that white. He must have looked more of olive skin kind of, like the others.
Mary looked exactly right after 30, She is not Haggard. People look exactly their age back then. No plastic surgery or skin cream to help you look younger so every one looked their age. If it was your son on trial, jailed and hanged? Tell me, will you be looking all pretty and happy? People age overnight under tremendous stress or disease.
Magdalene looked right too. Bible never portrayed her as a young woman or pretty.As far as I can tell this movie actually came closest to showing the actual life of Christ on earth

John 16:33--In this world you will have trials and tribulation, but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.
I very much enjoyed this realistic gospel rendition. The over-dubbing into English I thought was pretty well-done by the vocal talent, synching to the lip movements. I felt Jesus would have had a softer visage if they had shaved the middle portion of his eyebrow above the bridge of the nose. And Mary aged far too much in only thirty years, going from a lovely teenage girl to a haggard elderly woman. Magdalene, likewise, was an off portrayal, not to my liking. But the settings, even with the constant howling wind, were amazing. Where did they find that town? And those huge cone hats on the pharisees! wild. But these are just all nit-picking complaints. It was a fine film and very realistic to the era. Just trying to imagine living so sparsely compared to the technology and comforts of today, is mind-boggling. And, of course, the ministry and the message were wonderfully delivered. Perfect watch for Easter! Thank you hulu!

One can clearly see where Scorcese took his inspiration for The Last Temptation of Christ, without the use of the anacronistic music. Even an atheist like myself can find some wisdom in the life of Christ. It is unfortunate that it is a dubbed version presented here. The English voices seem a bit hard and harsh at times. It well worth checking out but be warned it moves at a leisurely pace, not exactly dull. It was made in a time at the end of the Italian neo-realist style of filmmaking so all the actors are non professional and the film sometimes has the feel of a documentary. I was absorbed in the atmosphere of the film. Unlike most films on Jesus it is not clean and pretty looking, but remains true to the real environment. It's odd that this film was made by an atheist, a Communist, and a homosexual.

This is such a beautiful film. I'm so glad Hulu has it for viewing. It's a true classic, a poem really. Pasolini's life of Christ has all of the majesty, grace, and strangeness that is found in the Gospel of Matthew revealed with the typical gentle empathy that made Pasolini a true master.
