Are you familiar with cochlear implants outside of this episode? It's not just wam bam thank you ma'am. Even though 3 years seems like a long time for you and I, think of how long it takes a normal hearing child to be able to speak clearly and properly. Then take into account how many sounds, not just talking, she can hear and how she has to process that.

Honestly, I was personally pretty impressed with it. There were still a few words that you could tell she hasn't quite gotten, but a lot of it just sounded like she had more of an accent, rather than in the beginning when I couldn't really understand a lot of what she was saying. I think it has something to do with how she hears actual sounds, they gave an example of how vocal words sound to a person with the cochlear implants and while you can understand what he says, it's not perfect speech that a normal person would be able to speak. She's learning by relation, hearing the voices of people she knows and imitating that; monkey see, monkey do. I think if what she heard was much clearer as what a normal person could hear, her speech would improve drastically. See 2 other replies

Long live PBS. You'll never see a show of this caliber on the Discovery Channel or TLC. Instead we get crab fishing and Jon and Kate plus 8.

Unfortunately we live in a country where people are even more ignorant about scientific breakthroughs than they are about the actions and policies of our government.

Also notice that the organizations developing these revolutionary technologies are non-profits. Where are the pharmaceutical companies? Where are the insurance companies?

The internet is free and computers are cheap. Get smart.
