Judge not ye, lest ye be judged.
I really enjoyed this film because it gave a nice, birds-eye view of contemporary life on a Northern Native American reservation. The basketball players and families are real people, with real assets and setbacks akin to any other American family. Yet, the cultural aspects of blending Native American with non-Native culture is present and intertwined in the focal point of the story... BASKETBALL.
I also think it paints a very poor picture of tolerance for Native Americans and the talent they bring to the court. It is a disappointment to see racism so alive and well in the larger areas surrounding the reservation. Instead of trying to understand something outside of themselves, many of the youth slew racial slurs, and inappropriate heckles and taunts at other youth... other athletes.
What may be recognized if the young students who were being racist is that Native American students negotiate two different worlds every day, and take into account Pan-American values every day. Basketball should be the common ground, the meeting ground... Not a place to continue an outdated form of social oppression.
Just play ball, anyone?
