In this movie as well as in others of his, I don't like the way he focuses on women in such a devotional sense. As though they give men their worth. I'm not xenophobic, but I am realistic, and I just don't see such devotion as psychologically popular.
Sure "women" are in a large way the point of this particular movie, but I still don't dig it. Compared to other filmmakers, Antonioni is so close up on his subject matter that there's little room to find a frame of reference. There's very little that he uses with which to frame and juxtapose his subject.
It's like, Ingmar Bergman packs into a single conversation what Antonioni spends a whole movie stating. But then Ingmar gives various reiterations of those ideas throughout his film in various ways amidst comedy and suspense which is actually palpable. Antonioni does this in a more singular, less understandable and most importantly, less emotionally gripping way.
The ending of this movie was nice. But certainly not something that would impress everyone.
