It felt like I just kept waiting for this movie to build up to something that just never happened. I liked the acting but I felt like the plot and/or script restrained their abilities. I quit with 30 minutes left in the movie, so I maybe it reached some sort of...something, but I didn't stick around to see.

I'm from New England, not England, but I grew up in the approximate time frame of this film. It was quietly expressive and subtly subversive in the way that anything counter to the idilic representation of life in the perfect family was in those times. As a relatively late in life lesbian, by some definitions anyway, I found the ending to be filled with promise and suggestion, but I really wanted confirmation. Like an affirmation that what happened to me has happened before.

Her disgruntled and narrow-scoped husband told Ellen that being working class is a latitude of mind. I think the film expounded on the concept of latitude of mind and created longitude to expand it and give it vision and dimension, with new horizons and depth of perception. The cinematography and photographic artistic eye throughout the film was so engaging, as were the subtle nuances of relationships--things said and left unsaid. It was a very moving piece and so well done. So worth the watch. Loved the ending.

This movie really pointed out the irony of how people who have decided to separate allow themselves to treat each other with much more respect and kindliness than they could muster when married, once their responsibility to each other is foregone. The lead actress had so much expression in her face which was even more poignant, because she was allowed to show her age a little. The theme was done simply and tastefully and it ended at just the right time; I think if carried further, difficulties would have become evident because I believe each of the women chose the relationship for different reasons.

It's the 50s. Mom's a housewife. Only dad works. So, where does she get the funds for all those bus and train trips? Certainly, not Victor's one drawing. And she's decided that since dad's left (for the moment) it's okay for her to begin a relationship with the teacher with Victor in tow? Just asking. Too slow to be considered dramatic.

Good performances from the cast. My only reservations are a) the synthesized music score: entirely wrong and anachronistic, and doesn't help create the mood and atmosphere; b) the locations, while totally accurate for the period, are more like a museum, with the cars and trains improbably - even impossibly - spotless, sparklingly clean.

I grew up in England during the 50s, and the trains (both locomotives and rolling stock) were invariably grimy, and certainly not anywhere as impossibly immaculate as shown here. The only times trains were spruced-up to look as shiny-new as there are here , was for state funerals or the arrival of foreign dignitaries, or for the first day of service. Just check footage and stills from the period!

The same goes for the cars and one bus!

Don't be put off by the tag "chick flick"; otherwise you may miss out on a film that is beyond expectations while remaining utterly true to it's setting. I say this as an older male ("Wendy" is my dog) and I think this movie is surprisingly satisfying on various levels.

All the characters are easy to empathize with and all end up growing. I agree the movie feels longer than it's run time. By the way, this is the US release version. The UK version is around 15 minutes shorter. I also agree about Ellen's eyes-- in fact her face is amazingly real and beautiful and as an actress she has full facility with it.
