Another great film. It comes off as a bit of a skit, but it still had me going during the encounters between the pretty-boy stage actor (Hase Ekman) and the pretty-girl carnie (Harriet Andersson). There's allot in here about what it means to perform amidst a species of performance. All that, "The world is a stage" type stuff. Fitting that squarely within clowns and circus music has me ready to accuse Federico Fellini of having a career based on plagiarism. But of course Fellini has his own form of "-esque."
There is really allot to love in this though, but it's limited rumination on performance had me hankering for Bergman's broader extrapolations of existentialism. As a result it's only 4 stars for me. If this came from the camp of a lesser man, say Kurosawa, (ooo them's fightin' words!) I'd be screaming 5 star genius. But as it stands, I know Bergman shines brighter elsewhere. Still, it's really good.
