The first time I watched this film, over a decade ago, it went right over my head. I didn't know much about Japanese culture or the period this was set in. I'm no expert now, but I've learned more in the ensuing years. Now I find the film to be, yes, slowly-paced but in a stately, majestic way that has great dignity. The wordless finale is moving in its restraint.
