The only reason I watched this movie was to watch the immortal María Félix peform her role as "La Abesse" in French. María Félix is without question Mexico´s most enduring star with a career that lasted from the 1930s until the late 1970s. There is NO ONE that can ever replace María Félix, know throughout the Spanish-speaking world as "La Doña," and honorific title, that in this case refers to her strong female characters and indominatable spirit. He personality not only suited Mexican directors, but French, Spanish, Italian and Argentine movie directors. She only made one film in English, with Jack Palance. My least favorite role. She deliberately shyed away from American films as she once said "they only want to have me play Native American roles," which is exactly what happened to Dolores del Río after he hey-day in 1930s Hollywood.
This is my favorite role, and she doesn´t get the exposure she deserves, as it is more of a supporting role. But, it does prove her flexability as an actress. Few, if any American actresses could perform a role in French, Italian or Spanish, as María Félix has done. She will forever remain one of my favorite actresses of all time. Punto final.
