These early Kurosawa movies seem to share a limitation, that being, one-dimensional characters. Sometimes that singular dimension is extremely well done, but even then, it's often not enough to carry me through the whole film without me getting fed up with it.
In this one, Mifune rules the streets as an unyielding drunken sour-puss, he was ok. Takeshi Shimura though, rules the screen as maybe my favorite character of his. He's the true drunken angel here. Even though he still gets overbearing as a constantly abrasive community father figure; he IS worth watching as, for me, the best part of this dated morality play.
