This is a great short film! I couldn't help but laugh when reading RB Jackson's review below. Because I happen to personally know the director of the film and we spoke about the project many times. After reading RB Jackson's review I gave "The Director" a ring and we shared a laugh about "the technicalities" and "reading and preparing" prior to shooting a movie. Perhaps RB Jackson should read the synopsis before watching a film or simply look up the term "ambiguous". He was right that the wadrobe is a mix of different uniforms, the soldier's carry M4's instead of M16's, which he failed to comment on. Some of the soldiers use liner's instead of helmets and the enemy wears white camo and gas masks. It was nice to see that someone finally recognized that they used a bunch of different equipment and uniforms. Why? Because the film is not about a specific war, but a moment of war, so it was an artistic choice to combine the elements of different soldiers from different eras. This was also because it is about an emotional transition in times of conflict that any soldier goes through in the world. Hence, you cannot see see the enemy's faces, because moron's like RB would automatically try to associate it with a particular war, whether the enemy were Asians, Germans, Russians, or Middle Easterners. That was the goal. Success.
What RB doesn't realize because he doesn't know the definition of "ambiguous" is that this is a war that has never happened. It is a borderline post-apocalyptic world so the soldiers use what they can get their hands on in order to survive. The background of the world is left up in the air because the film is not about the politics of it all, but the decision that Halloway has to make. I wouldn't expect RB who doesn't even know how to grammatically format a sentence to look beyond the superficial elements of the film.
Spend a little more time thinking about WHY they made those choices next time instead of assuming they didn't think about them or prepare. On your comment "even if you think the film is about a bunch of baby killers". The film is about a loss of innocence and the child is a metaphor for Halloway killing his inner child. Should I explain what a metaphor is for you as well? If you left thinking the film was about a bunch of baby killers maybe you should stick to cartoons, because you're never going to get the bang for your buck. Filmmakers try not to underestimate the intelligence of the audience, in this case....underestimated. If the acting was bad or the script was bad that is your opinion, but I thought it was great. Good job guys! Keep it up!
P.S. Rb probably spent his money this weekend watching Fast and the Furious 5.
Cheers and enjoy the film!
