I believe therapy is another chance at life. Each character got lost somewhere along the way and died before they were supposed to, so they are given another chance to and guided to do things differently. Kinda like a drug addict, you can't just clean them up and put them back on the street, they have to be taught how to live differently so that they choose another path.My question: What happens if you don't pass the test to become a therapist? As I understand it becoming a therapist is how you pay for your own therapy. So if you fail, do you get to keep your second chance? Do you continue with therapy and try again? When he comes back to sleep with Erica, while this occurs in the future for Erica from when Kai warns her about 2019, this occurs in a past regret-fix for Kai, hence why when he comes to warn her it has already happened for him. Because of all the time traveling and the different time periods, the timeline is jumbled.   See 1 other reply

My theory is that the patients are not dead currently, but did die in an alternate past. I noticed that in this episode Dr. Tom got to redo his regret concerning suicide. My theory is that Dr. Tom died from jumping off the building, which sent him to this supernatural universe for "therapy." This "therapy" clearly involves time travel for therapeutic purpose, as long as nothing done in that time travel drastically changes the lives of non-patients. This is why Erica could not go back and save her brother Leo. In conclusion, Erica did die due to her allergic reaction to hazlenuts. However, her supernatural "therapy" allowed her to go back in time and change that past. If you will go back to the beginning episodes in season 1, you will see that Erica did not live the original day the same when she was sent back in time and thus never consumed the hazlenuts and therefore did not die. Thus she is alive in the current time-stream. Her death is what allowed her to partake in this supernatural therapy and also what allowed her to prevent her death in this alternate time-stream. I think of it as sort of like the alternate reality in the latest Star Trek film. That film was pretty popular, so I am assuming that most of you get the reference. :-)   See 4 other replies

Interesting question! I'll try to explain it a few different ways & see if one makes sense. A throat clearing usually happens to make way for swallowing. A throat-clearing can happen when your throat constricts from feeling really dry from nervous tension or overly full of phlegm from say, crying for awhile. It's like when you have to cough, only in your throat not your lungs. For some people, it comes out like one of these: "Ehg-GHm" "aHEM" "hmg-HRMG" Sometimes 1, "EHM," but more often 2 beats, like "ehm-EHM." Others are 3 or 4, with the most emphasis on the last sound: "ehm-ehm-ehm-EHM." Next time you have a bit of difficulty swallowing, you might notice the involuntary rattling/vibration/harshness feel of your throat as it tries to free the airway. Chances are, you might be making a sound along with that & not even know it. You might see it on someone's face when they have a momentary intense expression, maybe a slight sideways twist to the mouth or narrowing of the lips, and the throat moves a bit (some hold their hand up to their throat for a second), but they're not really saying anything, just this rumble sound like a car engine trying to start. It often happens at the beginning of a reply, sometimes as a brief stalling tactic as they think of a response or prepare for what they're about to say; can also be a way to express irritation.   See 4 other replies

This idea has been floated by a number of people (myself included), but my sense now is that this is NOT the case.In that episode "Wash, Rinse, Repeat", you hear at the end that "Dr. Tom went into the future to 2019 to see if Erica was still alive to satisfy his curiosity. "If she was in Purgatory (or something similar) then there would be no need to go into the future to see if she was alive. That's just my two-cents.Just my two cents.   See 4 other replies
