This mainstream 1930s interpretation features a domesticated -- or should I say neutered? -- Catherine. Nevertheless, Elizabeth Bergner is charming, and the woman who plays Empress Elizabeth -- I didn't catch her name and I don't recognize her -- manages to be just this side of obnoxiously brash. Douglass Fairbanks Jr. seems miscast, but he adds so much to the scenery that I didn't mind. I watched this while cooking dinner, then watched it again later when I wasn't distracted, so it's worth your time.
