This movie has got allot of problems if you just want to watch a movie. It's very schematic, angular and overlong. Like allot of older movies, it holds onto emotional closeups that far overstay their welcome, but even for an older film it does this ALLOT.
At the same time though this movie is genius. It deals with allot of the basics of what keeps people together and what pushes them apart. I didn't focus so much on the idiot in the story as the primary character, but rather saw the 4-way love triangle in the story as a kind of north, south, east and west of the phyche.
For me, this movie comes off as a slow burning psychological thriller. If you can deal with the chunky storytelling, those extended close-ups and overexposed displays of emotion, I recommend it.
