I liked this movie. You can cut it to bits up the wazoo, you can let your emotions run rampant from :30 seconds in, you can rip other reviews to shreds, you can be indifferent...but me, I liked it.
Contrary to another review, this movie reminded me a lot of life during and after college. And I grew up in a small town too. My first sig. other played baseball, and at 20-21, we had our dillusions, dramas, and hopes/dreams; and in the end, we did part ways to go off to uni and to travel the world...actually, I wish I could do a do-over and substitute Marshall for said boyfriend. ;-)
The acting is great by everyone, which seems hard to do when you're not playing some intense or over-the-top characters. Calvin Marshall's (Alex Frost?) determination and optimism is both frustrating and charming, and you feel for the has-been coach (Zahn) who struggles with the emptiness of his own life and then being empathetic to Marshall. And Jensen (Lombardo), the volleyball star/love interest of Marshall is very believable, being at a pivotal age and time in her life, dealing with a bright future, wanting to have fun in the present, and then coping with death/loss.
I had a tear at the end of the film, but I don't even know at what point it actually fell.
2 Thumbs up!
