I will not denigrate this movie, or any of the people portrayed therein. I am certain that their stories are true, and we must all acknowledge their contributions.
However, this movie suggests, particularly to the Americans, that they were the only contributors to the defeat of Germany. For example, during the whole movie, I only saw four very oblique references to the involvement of the British. There were no references to the free French, the free Dutch, the free Polish, or any one of the host of countries inolved in this struggle.
The movie suggests that the war started in December 1942, but that is only for the American history books. In realty, the war commencd in September 1939, and Europe lost far more people in this war than the United States.
Across Europe, the average loss to this war was approcimately 4% of the population of that country. Naturally, considering the shape of this war, some nations suffered far harder than others, for example, Poland lost 16% of their population.
The British, with a population of about 48 million lost at least 1% of their population, actually greater in number of deaths than the United States, who lost about 0.3% of their population..
There is no mention in this movie of the efforts by the British, the free French, the free Dutch, and the free Polish to facilitate the D day landings, and there is also no mention of their participation. The D Day effort could not have happened without the work that these people put into the plan, and, furthermore, the Americans were not the only nation to participate in this landing.
I give the sevicemen 5 stars for their partiipation, I give the US military 0 stars for a deliberate attempt to distort history.
