Just a weird campy over the top Japanese 70's weirdness fest. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A definite must see midnite movie!

Picture The Banana Splits Adventure Hour with blood. And thank me for having saved you 88 minutes you'd have otherwise wasted by watching this film.

Pee-Wee Herman meets Quentin Tarantino and they drop acid and watch Saturday morning cartoons and Japanese horror movies.
Nobuhiko Obayashi has the most unusual directorial style, sort of a more surreal John Waters and a more puckish, but no less ghoulish, Tim Burton. And he does weird things in scenes that at least make this great for watching under the influence of whatever sorts of things you might like for movie-watching. Some camera tricks and deliberately cheap special effects make you FEEL like you're on drugs.
But I may be too generous in throwing around popular director names. I'm still not sure what to make of such bizarrely presented material.
The first half-hour is spent with these insufferably over-the-top cutesy girls with names like Gorgeous, and Kung Fu, and Professor, before anything happens. Around the forty-minute mark it goes into some high camp. After about an hour things get more ghoulish as we move to a conclusion, but no denouement, that is more grim than what its cartoon style would have you expect.
Recommended only if you like the Truly Weird and campy.

The matte paintings in the background are kind of pretty. There, I found something positive to say about this movie, but other than that there's not much here to compliment. For the most part, the soundtrack is part Bozo the Clown episode, part Ronnie Milsap style 70's soft rock licks, and just begins to wear on your ears the longer you watch. It kind of makes you wonder if the editor had just graduated from film school because every conceivable push and dissolve are used repeatedly to shift scenes and it really gets old quick. At the heart of the matter is the question of what this movies aim is. Is it a comedy? Is it a Horror story? If it's a comedy, it probably rates higher than if it's intended to be scary, but that ain't sayin' much. With characters named Fantasy, Kung Fu, Sweet, and Gorgeous it's pretty hard to take seriously. So bad it almost defies description, I think I'd rather watch a Hardcastle & McCormick marathon. Go rent Evil Dead 2 again instead of watching this.

If you're curious about the effects of LSD but are too afraid to use it, look no further. At first, I thought it was a joke, and then...I couldn't wait for what would happen next. It's like a flip book made from random pictures, yet it still somehow has a plot.Blown away.Absolutely blown away.What did I just watch?Wow.Yes, that really just happened.
