I watched this film because I was curious as to why Criterion would release an ultra low budget 80's horror comedy. I'm still very curious. Why? The film is absolutely terrible in every way. Even the term zombie is very loosely used to describe the two zombies in this film. I looked up the director on IMDB and apparently, not only is it his only film, but he became a monk afterward to live a life of repentance. I'm not surprised.

Recommended only for people who like, or at least have the patience for, bad B movies.

This movie is actually pretty funny. It's in the same neighborhood as Tromaville, and has the classic high school hijinx of a good National Lampoon piece. 70s Lampoon -- before it stunk.

Janus Films? The Criterion Collection? Really?!? Maybe they acquired "I Was A Teenage Zombie" because of its soundtrack, featuring The Fleshtones, The Violent Femmes, Los Lobos, The Waitresses, etc., but did they watch the film? Calling it cheesy and amateurish is an understatement, which I suppose make the film enjoyable in its own way. Still, its far from the art films one associates with Janus or Criterion, so it definitely sticks out like a sore thumb.

This movie is about what you'd expect, with the help of a great 80's soundtrack (Violent Femmes, Fleshtones) and an enthusiastic cast who contribute some unhinged performances. Most of the gore is in the final 15 minutes, and that doesn't disappoint.
