Forced to murder lost samurai and sell their belongings for grain, they dump the corpses down a deep, dark hole and live off of their meager spoils. When a bedraggled neighbor returns from the skirmishes, lust, jealousy, and rage threaten to destroy the trio’s tenuous existence, before an ominous, ill-gotten demon mask seals the trio’s horrifying fate. Driven by primal emotions, dark eroticism, a frenzied score by Hikaru Hayashi, and stunning images both lyrical and macabre, Kaneto Shindô's chilling folktale Onibaba is a singular cinematic experience.

Very strange and original movie - can't say I've seen another like it. Maybe "Woman in the Dunes" comes close. The tall grass is a fascinating setting for the secrecy and treachery of the storyline. Personally, I like movies in which there are no truly likable characters; they often portray people more like they really are. The old woman is a particularly strong and believable character - the actress who played her is excellent.

This movie plays a lot like your garden variety drive-in third feature. You've got some melodrama thrown in there for good measure, and what seemed like about 15 minutes worth of elephant grass close-ups sprinkled liberally over the running time. While the movie does tend to drag a little, there's a steady supply of let's just call 'em female chests cut in for your viewing pleasure, and in keeping with the drive-in vibe. I dislike the films official description, also because I feel like it tells most of the story before you watch it, so if you haven't read it yet, watch the movie first. Check it out, it's entertaining enough.

First you put it on the main Hulu screen as a selection with NO indication that it is Hulu Plus, only a button for "watch it now".

Then when I get to the movie screen I find out it is Hulu Plus - and I get a free 90 second preview.

The preview consists of 60 seconds of the screen loading, followed by 30 seconds of credits. Do I know if I want to watch this movie? Certainly not on Hulu; I'll watch it on Netflix instead. If I have to pay to see anything besides the credits, I'll watch it on a service I have already paid for.

extremely original and involving. The setting and plot are minimal, but perfect for the film. The images can be quite beautiful at times, but you never fell at ease. Overall, imaginative and a different take on suspense, or horror in some instances.

i'm not sure of the significance of Hachi's death.... oops too much to give away perhaps. all in all, a dark tail of survival in war torn feudal japan. interesting
