The imagery and concepts of this movie have worked their way into my nightmares. Those that need gore in their horror will be disappointed, the terror in this movie lies in the ideas it presents and what happens off screen.

I watched the American version first with Keifer sutherland and Sandra Bullock. Everyone suggested watching the original and I would have to say I liked it "ok" Pretty creepy for no real blood or gore.

The plot was a bit tiring. But I give kudos to Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu for bringing the creepiness factor to his character. A character who clearly perceived that he was a monster. Who openly recounted his evil choices and shared what motivated him to do unspeakable acts.

Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu dishes up horror in slightly uncomfortable portions as the movie progresses. The best way to subvert your sense of safety and leave you with that feeling of yuck that you can't shake for the next 24 hours.

This is another one of those flicks that you've seen a hundred different times in one form or another. An incredibly tired plot device really needs something so that it doesn't lose steam, like maybe an actor or actress who really brings something special to the role, bur unfortunately there really isn't any saving grace here. You probably could have adapted this into a passable episode of Tales From the Dark Side, but making this movie in 1988 is to add this to the thousand and one other movies with this basic story. I'd recommend just finding something else to watch.
