There's a special feature on Hulu for this movie that shows off del Toro's working environment. His place is filled to the brim with creepy gear, and this film, though it's not particularly creepy, feels like it was made by a dude who works in a place filled with creepy gear.
Actually all of his work has that feeling. It's tangibly authentic in it's creepiness even when it's nothing more than a movie like this. With the story arch of a Walt Disney t.v. movie and the lighting/music to fit that bill as well. I liked the golden egg idea though.. the bug and clockwork shots were very cool.

This movie was ok. It was a new twist on the whole vampire thing, and the story behind the device was kind of interesting. I think more could've been done with this one though. Pan's Labyrinth was better I thought.

Despite its flippant tone, this is the most insightful review here. Pointing out that the script just doesn't seem to care much about the characters or their situation, or really make us care about them more than we would about strangers, is a more precise way of conveying what I tried to get across in my review when I said the characters were 2-dimensional. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way.

The writing was just terrible. Really cheesy and predictable. A generic, cornball supernatural "drama" with 2-dimensional characters (aside from the main character, who I admit showed some complexity) and everything done in the most cliched and/or sappy way possible at every juncture. If just the *idea* of vampires excites you, you might like this. If you want more than that (like, say, a plot), you won't find it here.

Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan's THE STRAIN trilogy draws from CRONOS quite a bit. And that's part of why I liked this movie. It was very chilling, but very interesting as well. It's one of those films where you have to sit through the whole thing.
