to those of you who think this is serious, well.. I'd start a thorough head examination if I were you..
This is satire, plain and simple, illustrating the nasty connection between media reporting (both 'news' and fiction), viewers and their base appetites, and brutal violence.
Each feeds into the other. The camera crew gets both real and imagined profits from their audience (which will swell the more acts of violence benoit commits), viewers get what they want to see (base violence and sex), and benoit gets adulation and purpose. He's the ultimate narcissist, driven by both animal drive and desire to be the center of attention, and having this film made for him to a tee.
Look around you at the media that we have today - this is an exaggeration, but not much of one. 'News' shows like the ones on fox are now outlets for the most extreme of viewpoints, the media loves nothing more than a juicy tragedy to exploit, and we all suffer its effects: unbalanced policies that drive us deep into debt, a consumer driven culture which is driving the environment over the edge, and no thought as to how we are going to live sustainably in the coming years. And we have done this to ourselves.
We've given in to our lowest appetites, the media have obligated to provide for them, and the lack of thought has led to policies that serve us more tragedy and extremism as a result. It all loops round and round, a vicious cycle which we may or may not escape from.
So, brilliant stuff. Just don't watch it on a full stomach, and definitely *don't* treat it literally.
