I hear you, and God knows we've heard this excuse from other countries for taking whatever overreacting measure against the US' perceived attacks on their sovereignty. They burn our flags and spit on our presidents' effigies, but we'd better not mess with one copy of the Koran and make sure to give OBL a 'proper' burial. The simple fact that we make an effort to play that hypocritical game is just one clue that WE are the good guys. But the thing is, we live in a global world where closing one's borders and ignoring what's going on beyond is a very short-sighted, ostrich-like policy. The 'wag the dog' thing you mentioned is real, unfortunately, but doesn't mean that every single step taken is a sham. And I'll tell you one thing, anyway: I've watched our presidents lie about the real reason for military action before... and supported them wholeheartedly, knowing that the general public was just too ignorant and naive to understand. Some people have to be treated like children and told fairy tales so that they go with the program - sad, but true. Bottom line: seems to me that people either take for granted, or have a complete blind spot for, all the GOOD that the US does abroad, either in the form of aid, or military intervention. That much of it is done in the interest of Uncle Sam, long or short term, seems to rub the naive the wrong way. Personally, I think it's the nature of geopolitics and unavoidable. Much of our foreign policy is about investments in the world's future and our place in it - nothing to do with world domination. Some make it sound like we're an evil empire on par with the Third Reich or the Soviet Union. Let's get real.   See 15 other replies

Some of the people are speaking Cantonese, others Mandarin. It's all dubbed over to Mandarin for mass consumption because the Chinese government doesn't believe in Cantonese.It's really annoying to watch some thing WITH subtitles and the voices STILL aren't synced to the lips :/   See 5 other replies
