Just noting that before computers and their ability to reiterate patterns ad infinitum, Hokusai had discovered that you can draw nature that way. His Great Wave Off Kanagawa is often used to show the technique, and it's amazing (ah, not so much) that an artist had the sensibility to pick up on something that took another 130 years to physics to describe.

Not that shocking to me, but I'll admit that [SPOILER!!] playing with live octopi, using them as erotic props, and fantasizing about giant ones having sex with a woman is a tad out there. Squids and octopi are such staples of asian diets that to the Japanese it was probably more like the fridge scene in 9 1/2 Weeks. Seems to me that, famous as he may have been toward the end, his existence remained rather modest. Remember the model, incredulous that he was the master and calling his dwelling a pig sty? I agree with the 'straight-forward' description: this is not an ambitious film trying to reach penetrative insights into the creative process, or using dazzling narrative techniques.
