No matter what complaints in the other reviews for the Wong series, I find Karloff excellent and engaging. He gives the perfect detectiveness just like a Sherlock Holmes--as if he put a touch of that character into his own, but with a subtler oriental grace twist. James Lee Wong, graduate of Oxford University, can easily have been an American mixed oriental--it seems even implied, living in San Francisco. So with the theatre's motto of "willing suspension of disbelief" it is easy to accept Karloff in the role. And for this era, the late 1930s, I can't imagine another actor who could have played it any better and with such finesse. The stories are so well written! That's the best part, for without good writing in a detective story it doesn't come off well at all. Well worth watching all of these movies! Thanks hulu!
