Reviews for this film have been saying it doesn't work because of a juxtaposition of tone, i.e. light romantic element one moment, then heavy superhero stuff the next. That's not the problem and I suggest those reviewers are almost as lacking in understanding of good story structure as the committee of non-filmaker studio execs who are not qualified to discern good writing or writers, and have no business overseeing script edits, giving notes, or approving rewrites. The problem, regardless of the tone is THERE IS NOTHING AT STAKE in this film. Not on the romantic side, not on a personal level for the character, and not for the viewer. The world at stake is a planet we know little about and care nothing for as viewers. Our world is not put in serious jeopardy by the story. And while Jordan would prefer to have the girl rather than not, it doesn't rise to much more than that. It's not soulmate, all consuming desire type stuff. So it doesn't get the viewer emotionally involved at all, thus rendering the film boring as watching paint dry.
