Being the same age as the main actors in the film, and having seen the movie when it first hit the U.S. Indie theater circuit in the early 1980s, I can share some historical perspective. The clothing and hairstyles, while a bit geeky today, were very cutting edge for the time, and a bit more cutting edge than the mainstream U.S. fashions at the time. The aesthetics of the casting captures the true awkwardness of being a teenager, as opposed to say a 90210 idealized approach, so yes, everyone looks a bit dorky. One could almost compare the main character to Napoleon Dynamite ... a bit over the top with ill-equipped social skills, but in a more subtle, understated way. The film was very popular with the critics and audiences of the time. I own a VHS copy, and it was nice seeing the movie again in full width and better resolution.
