I read this wonderful book when I was a 19 yr. old student of Literature in India. Granted that most media version of books can never capture the essence you find in those stories, this series manages to be a moving rendition of Naylor's book. Hulu tags it with "Black Women", "Oprah" and "colored girls", but this work transcends superficial categories and is ultimately about the philosophical truths that encompass humanity - love, loss, resilience, hope, dignity, strength - all told through the lives of these wonderful black women, the inhabitants of Brewster Place. A fine cast and a subtle retelling - something rarely found in media these days. You are left wondering about the great divide in Hollywood and why with some of the calibre of the actors here, were they not seen more.
