I see a lot of negative comments about Cage's fake sounding accent; but, actually having met someone who is not quite as disturbed as the character Cage plays, but well on his way, I can positively say that Cage's accent, body posturing, fits of rage, and the rest are a perfectly, and I mean perfectly, played enactment of my unfortunate acquaintance, with whom I've thankfully long lost contact. I'm surprised that more people don't get that Cage is playing someone who is not happy with his real self and who tries to put on airs that are obvious to everyone around him. Yet, just as in real life some one like this can be, through inheritance or other mishap, put in a position of power where someone like Alva, his employee, feels they have to put up with him. This only serves to convince such a person that they are really pulling off the "airs," yet many of us have met such people in real life and found that their fake sounding accents come and go along with other attempts to be someone they are not. So, at first you hear the accent and think this is a bad movie because Cage seems so faked. Then, if you are a person who has been around a while and seen a few things you'd rather not have, the all too real nature of the "vampire" played by Cage unfolds gradually and ever more disturbingly. I personally found it not at all funny. But, I can see how someone who has never actually met someone like Cage's character would think it was funny. People often do laugh about such real life characters behind their backs. In real life, most such people work things out eventually, but some devolve as Cage's character, even to the point where they might willing become a vampire, sucking blood, even killing. Just watch the news for daily examples. This movie has equal parts disturbingly real humanity at its worst and vampire movie atmosphere, which together kept me on the hook for the whole thing. I couldn't put it down until it was over. If you are interested in both abnormal psychology and vampires, this movie combines them really well into a quirky, offbeat and ultimately abundantly worthwhile movie. If you've never met anyone who is a bit too put on and wondered just how disturbed they were or how far it might go, then you might not find it as intriguing, but you still might enjoy it as humor, as several who have like it very much have. Either way, it's worth your watch. If you are expecting an ordinary vampire movie, though, you might not care for it or get it. That's okay, too. I think whether you get the movie, or find it funny, or don't care much for it will depend a lot on the particular people and life experiences that you have stumbled into and it's not in any way an indication of your value, intelligence or whatever. So, I hope no one will take my comments as a negative comment about them. At the same time, I feel the movie will work brilliantly for a certain subset of people. Hopefully, those people will self-identify when they read this review and choose to see the film. I saw it; and, I'm glad I did.
