One of the classics of Japanese Animation — a benchmark film in many ways — breaking free of Japanese-bound stories that Toei Animation had mostly produced previously, such as LITTLE PRINCE AND THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON and THE MAGIC BOY (all released in the US by various studios). This is considered the breakout film for Isao Takahata (GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES), and featured classic character designs by Yasuo Otsuka (LUPIN III). Also featuring contributions from the then-up and coming, Hayao Miyazaki, Yoichi Kotabe, and Yasuji Mori.
The original Japanese title was "Horus: Prince of the Sun" (aka "The Sun Prince: Hols' Great Adventure"). It is available as an English-subtitled DVD (PAL and Region 2) in the UK under the title "The Little Norse Prince" from Optimum Releasing. Toei Video in Japan also has issued this film in anamorphic widescreen for DVD. This is the way to go in seeing this film — this Hulu presentation undermines the film's integrity.
I would have rated this Five Stars, but this presentation badly needs to be remastered and presented in its original 1:35 widescreen anamorphic ratio — this presentation works against the original's visual strengths, and makes the film look cheap with muted colors. Serious restoration is in order for this film to be fully appreciated.
