Its a piece of fiction, not history. So why is it disgraceful? As for knowing survivors of those times, I knew some people very well who experienced the war in Europe very personally. My dad for one, was there for 3 years, and was wounded there. As to the fiction, I have to say the character played by Bill Paxton was a selfish idiot. Aside from his sacrifice, his character was unlike any soldier I knew or heard of.

A story of forbiden love in a war torn country, with the hateful, criminal Nazi's in control. Hate them! The movie could have been better but it was good enough; you get the point of people's sacrifice and the longing of some, during such herroundous times. To a commenter here that said Americans arrogance...bull to you, Americans have been saving lives and helping countries for decades and many have died, sometimes for nothing, but still they help and some die, so....bull to you. Watch the movie and if you haven't done so already, don't read the other comments, there are spoilers....when will people understand what "spoiler" means!!!!

Arrogance of the American seems to be representative of why Americans are often in disfavor as guests in other countries.

Hollowwood writers need to be authentic in speech and mannerisms of the time. I was constantly aware that modern American actors were the people who were speaking to each other, rather than persons of the war era. Lackadaisical American actors were cut and pasted into otherwise believable war scenes. The American pilot was not at all believable. Nobody was believable. Their actions were not believable, either.
The reality is that this cheap and sleazy flick was intended to be a "Harlequin novel," to put it politely.

Inane and insipid. To create an estrogen-soaked romance set against the backdrop of the heroic sacrifice of people still alive to recall the memory of acutual events is disgraceful. But then, again, few of the fans of this piece of tripe have ever spoken directly to a survivor of these times.
