The energy is needed. It need not be in the form of blood. Because she is human the energy is in the blood. Despite what Glory says, the key could not really be a lifeless object. It has to be live to contain the living energy. After all, she really isn't the brightest god in the heavens. It probably could have been a tree or some other living thing, then the energy would have taken another form. However, if that were the case, Buffy would have probably allowed Glory to use it and go home given the risks involved in trying to stop her. After all, it is the demention she is going to is the one that is really at risk, which is not Buffy's problem. The Monks made the key human to manipulate Buffy into doing their work for them after they were killed by the beast, as they fully expected to be.
