Actually Joseph, the leading theory in most Christian communities is that the universe is 6,000 years old.
The Bible does not say that people can keep slaves, it simply records instances of slavery, as well as instructions for slaves to be obedient. This was a double edged sword (in the lightest of possible meanings) as Paul knew that since many of these slaves had Christian masters, soon the masters would feel to awkward and most likely set the slave free and hire them as free-men. That was all according to Roman, not Judaic law.
Joseph was sold according to Ishmaelite/Egyptian rules, not Hebrew.
Those are probably the two biggest/most known incidents of slavery in the Bible, any more you would like to reference would be enjoyed by me, if no one else.
Also, from a purely hypothetical standpoint, if a god wrote a holy book of scientific facts, procedures, etc., wouldn't it be likely that something so incredibly complicated would be distorted throughout the ages? (and don't say this happened with the Bible, historical facts of an often oppressed people are much easier to keep accurate than a description of an atom, or explanation on how a cam-shaft works.) It would also lead to theories of alien visitation, eventually removing faith from the religion at all. Assuming this hypothetical god is omnipotent/omniscient/omnipresent would he/she/it/you/me/Bill Murray want to be the continual focus of your worshipers, rather than the physical knowledge graciously imparted through inspiration and parchment?
