the director was John Huston, not John Ford, both great directors, but Ford is in a class by himself

True to culture in the Orient, Westerners, could not get a grip on customs from others not Western. We are a very young country, and there's has been around a few thousand years. It is a great and entertaining film whose historical value shows, 2 totally opposite cultures. Good insight!

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_empty Rating_empty Not Typical
Not your typical John Wayne movie but nonetheless, done with a class touch by excellent directing of John Ford; who directed Wayne's first famous western, "Stagecoach". Completely set in Japan, this movie delights in some really nice location settings, showing some of the history of the Shogun, as well as the customs of the Japanese people. A nice movie fit for family viewing.

I would of liked John Wayne's work if he became famous around this century. I'm not into early 60's direction of movies or all the cultural entertainment and customs of their country. If this movie was made now it would be done differently and more creatively entertaining , I think. Didn't like it.

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full A Great Movie
If you loved Shogun by James Clavell you will enjoy this. It is not nearly as good as or as long as Shogun, but very similar. Almost like a sequel that is 250 years later. Japan demanded isolation from the world because of the events that are depicted in Shogun; mainly the greedy vatican and the sneaky and manipulating papist priests that were interfering in internal politics for money. The treaty of Saragosa is mentioned in Shogun. After that era, Japan went back into isolation, until the story depicted in this movie opened them back up. A Great Movie.

Once upon a time all "A" movies such as this ruled. How refreshing to see epic stories in glorious color showing the meaning of true movie craft: suspence without violence, horror without ugliness and vocabularies without vulgarities.
