i find it telling that another reviewer described dominique dunne in this episode as distressed. her career seemed to be filmed with distressed women and her destiny resonates with tragedy of a promise unfulfilled. i must say that i have more respect for dominique as an affecting actress than i ever had for her father--a defacto judge, jury and executioner with his poison pen and venomous tongue.
i understand that the loss of his daughter coloured dominic dunne's life and his work as a novelist, but still, dominic dunne never met a defendant that he didn't already presume was guilty. the only person dominique dunne never considered to be guilty of any wrong-doing was his fair-headed spiritual son, mark furhman. now mark furhman, dominic loved, go figure. he even formed this bizarre relationship with eric menedez which he spoke about on the larry king show where he said he was urging eric menendez to admit that he was gay. hmmm...if you weren't already gay being sexed up nightly by your own father's perverse lust might make you that way.
in fact, dominic dunne once hinted that he might have been sexually abused by his older brother as a young boy, but he kind of glossed over it as if it were nothing but boyish hijinks.
however, back to dominique dunne, i really feel for her as someone who wants to make her life better in this episode, but doesn't know how to escape from the trap laid for her by someone else. in this case, her pimp. it echoes the reality of dominique's personal life where she was trapped in an abusive relationship with a sociopath. perhaps dominique was using her acting to exorcise some personal demons. i wonder what her relationship was like with her father. another great performance by dominique dunne is from a 1979 movie called hitchhiking which appeared on abc as a starring vehicle for charlene tilton who was riding high on her dallas fame.
at the time hitchhiking was such a big deal as it had been for decades that it warranted its own abc movie of the week. in the movie, several young girls are brutally attacked and left for dead after they unknowingly accept rides from a deranged young man in a van with tinted windows. in the best scene of her life, dominique breaks down in her hospital bed after she tearfully blames herself for being brutally beaten and attacked by the sociopath.
you really feel for her. dominique had a gift.
