I have to agree that the second season is lackluster. The first case didn't last long enough for me to really get in touch with Sharon, so the way she left the show was not a very emotional one for me. The first season followed one case for twenty episodes. In those twenty episodes, it was an emotional roller coaster with Neil Avedon, Richard Cross, plus the defense team. It showed how the stress worked their relationships over time, making it both subtle and believable. But the second season is trying to cram more drama in fewer episodes, forcing the dialogue and the plot. I'm glad Hulu stops at the second season (if there are in fact more seasons) simply because I would continue to watch, hoping to regain the more romantic appeal of the first season but facing disappointment every time.
