is the problem they are facing. Big food manufacturers/institutional food packers fight like hell for those government contracts and some locked in for years at a time. Subsidiary branches of big US food companies are actually created just to fulfill a cherished long term government school lunch contract. That nice food advisor lady is stuck with the food and ordering it probably under contract. Those food suppliers most probably have a friend in Washington and they will fight to keep those massive accounts and product shipping for the big money. That is a real sticky issue.
The companies got into it because the ingredients are crap , cheap to make and subsidised by the taxpayers. If the contract is broken the company may be able to recover breach of contract in a big way once again from taxpayers. I love, love what he is doing but it is like a Jamie and Goliath story here. Good luck..change is difficult but this is such an immensely valuable change for all school children and parents it must move forward. I can tell you this as a food industry pro the kitchens will be cleaner and free of the many chemicals inproccessed foods. A safer environment for the kitchen staff.
I vote one year contracts if any. The food supplier must take on the cost of changing not the other way around. We have the same problem in Chicago.
Thanks to this program the school districts saw that because of this show the spotlight would be placed on them also and they have begun to adress the issue. It can be done, it will be done and it doesn't have to include resistance or animosity . Kitchen workers WILL need to train themselves in new ways once and for all for the benefit of all.
Obesity is a painful condition for young people and once down that road nearly impossible to escape.
The kitchen staff themselves will become real chefs and cooks. A win win!
