However, in the episode where the girl had Tetanus, Ichi had purchased the IMPORTED medicine. Maybe this was something that was introduced around the same time as when Europeans met Japanese. See 2 other replies

My favorite one yet. There is so much meaning and care put into these movies that I dont think it is far from the truth when I say that most movies today cant touch Zatoichi with a 10,000 mile pole. I think I would like to own all of these and I havent bought a movie in years. They all suck. Zatoichi rules.

I love the scene where he finds the box of medicine again, I remember yelling when it was right next to him and he finally moved his hand and nudged it. It was well done emotionally, the man is a force of nature on the battlefield and he just wanted to find that medicine to help that kid and it was driving him insane he couldn't do something as simple as that. This is probably about my third favorite Zatoichi film.

Is there a scene in Kill Bill that looks remarkably like the opening image in this film? I have this memory of David Carradine sitting outside with Uma Thurman in a setting that looked similar. It's a been a while though so I can't be sure.

You HAVE to love this series. It has everything--great stories, lots of action, a larger than life hero, cute kids and beautiful women.
It is easy to see that this was the precursor for so many westerns.
