I wish there were still shows like this on TV. Shows that the whole family could watch together. No show these days has lasted 23 years like The Ed Sullivan Show did! It was pure genuine entertainment! Fortunately , with all this technology now-a-days and the available DVD collections from this show, we are able to re-live the 50',60's and 70's. Good memories!
The old style TV variety show. An America long gone. Some is brilliant & classic, some have aged very poorly - including some big stars of the era. Had a friend who once said the 1950's began immediately after World War 2 and ended when the Beatles played Sullivan. And it's true. Even w/ all the startling changes in America it took an English rock band to finally knock over the apple cart & drag us into the 1960s. The Sullivan Show in 1965 looked much different than in 1963. They should show this in high school American history classes.
You took the words right out of my mouth! Singers had great voices, comedians made you laugh without having to spew profanity & there was something for every member of the family. The plate spinners were my favorite novelty act.

What made the show great was that we got to see every type of performer/act imaginable & unimaginable. We were privy to performances that wouldn't be shown anywhere else. I have found that the older variety programs have been homogenized & edited so that we no longer recognize them. As an example, I purchased on the DVD set of ‘The Dean Martin Variety Hour’. What I got was clips of different shows mixed up, with no continuity. It is a shame that TPTB treat us all as if we are the people that were on stage in the Jerry Springer show.

All the cheesy, white rock stuff was in the front. The GOOD musicians, like Stevie Wonder, were all crowded together at the end of the program, with no narration, no Sullivan reaction. Nothing.Yeah, I know: Moms Mabley. She's a comedian, like Richard Pryor. And Pearl Bailey was frequently a comedy act, too.Ella/Sammy was the only musical selection, and they were the prior generation. All CONTEMPORARY African American singers went to the back of the bus. That's not the Sullivan show; that's the editors/producers of this tape.
